Methodology

What It Measures

Rates bushfire risk on a 0-100 scale (100 = safest). Combines official planning overlays with satellite vegetation analysis, terrain slope, and fire history.

Data Sources

Planning overlays (VIC BMO, NSW BPL, WA OBRM, SA zones, TAS)
ESA WorldCover 10m land cover (vegetation fuel load)
Copernicus DEM 30m (terrain slope)
MODIS Burned Area (fire history, 3 seasons)

Scoring

Official overlay severity (extreme/high/moderate/low)
Vegetation fuel risk (tree cover > shrub > grass > built-up)
Terrain slope amplifier (steep = faster fire spread)
Fire history penalty (recent burns = proven risk)
Final score = min(overlay, satellite) with fire adjustment

Limitations

Not a BAL (Bushfire Attack Level) assessment
QLD, NT lack public overlay data
MODIS 500m resolution misses small fires
