Methodology

What It Measures

Rates how quiet a location is on a 0-100 scale (100 = quietest). Combines road traffic, rail/tram, and aircraft noise using physics-based acoustic models and real government data.

VicRoads AADT — 14,662 segments
NFDH Harmonised National — 8,000+ stations
Overture Maps road network — 592,748 segments
PTV/TransLink/Transperth GTFS — 184 routes
Overture building footprints — 13.6M
ANEF aviation contours — VIC + NSW + QLD + WA + Defence

Propagation Model

Road: CRTN L10 formula with duty-cycle correction
Rail: SEL-based with actual service counts
Distance: geometric spreading + ground absorption
Building screening: Maekawa barrier (up to 20 dB)
Energy sum: top-3 road + top-2 rail sources
Aircraft: ANEF zone ambient penalty

Limitations

AADT coverage varies by state (VicRoads strongest)
No industrial or construction noise
Ocean surf detected but not scored (natural ambient)
Building screening effective for secondary sources only
